We Lose Our Phones So You Don’t Have To

Our beach experiment shows how to increase the odds of getting your lost phone back.

Summer is a dangerous time for your phone. According to our data, there’s a 50 percent jump in smartphone loss and theft during summer months. With all the traveling and outdoor activities, it’s easy to see why.

In a recent experiment, a team of tech experts visited popular summertime locations around the U.S. and purposefully lost their phones at beaches, parks, and public transportation to mimic real-life situations. They discovered you’re 3 times more likely to have your phone returned if your contact info is displayed on the Lock screen.

Did you know: 71% of people lock their phones for security, but less than 25% have their contact info displayed should they misplace it.

For the best protection, our experts recommend setting up Find My iPhone or Find My Device with Google. If you ever lose your phone, you can sign in to the app and send a custom message with an alternate phone number or email address to the phone screen.

If you tend to “misplace” your phone often, you may want to add your contact info to the wallpaper on your Lock screen. Need help adding text to a photo? Message an expert—we’re here to help.
